Josefinenalm is a temporary hut built in the inner yard of the old general hospital (now a University campus) just for the purpose of the annual Christmas market. I don’t remember the hut being there a year ago (although I remember a Brettljause was served by someone), so there is no guarantee it will be there next year or ever again.

If not, it’s not going to be a huge loss. After all, the hut belongs to the Josefinenhütte, located near Kahlenberg and serving a Brettljause of its own. On the other hand, for some reason this “seasonal Jause” turned out to be better than the original. All the salamis are gone, seemingly having been replaced by three types of ham (Hüttenschinken – whatever that is, – Beinschinken and Landschinken) and Speck. I say “seemingly” because it was really hard to find any difference in taste or even in appearance among them. Some “mountain cheese” was there as well, having just a bit of bitter taste. The two spreads – a Liptauer and a herby one – were the tastiest ingredients and came in such quantities that all three provided bread slices were quickly consumed. The only other distinctive “feature” of the Jause was the presence of two rather hot peppers.

Generally, it was an unexceptional but not unpleasant experience, probably because the entire hut was nearly empty in the expectation of a huge party. There is no reason to repeat it given the opportunity, but to be realistic, must worse Brettljausen can be found in Vienna with no effort at all.
