10-minute walk from the thermal spa of Oberlaa, Weinlaube is a surprisingly nice and quiet restaurant with a worryingly long menu containing pictures of every dish. While that could easily be expected in the touristic center of the city, the pictures looked a bit weird there, as far from the center of Vienna as one can possibly get without actually crossing into the Lower Austria.

Their Brettljause looked more impressive than its depiction on the card: it was huge, nicely arranged, quite varied and had a small bottle of Schnapps in the middle. Half way through, and the initial excitement dwindled down. It was just too much of the same. The meats were different, in theory (pork jelly, Speck, Schweinbraten, Geselchtes, Blutwurst and a long Tyrolean salami cut into small slices), but all tasted as if coming from exactly the same pig. The jelly was too abundant for my liking and had the tendency to fall apart, taking far too long to finish as a result. The Verhackertes spread was the single best ingredient, having a strong taste and going well with the fresh onions. The Liptauer was just a Liptauer.

Weinlaube’s Brettljause would be a fine snack to share among three not very hungry people. When eating alone, it is quite boring.
