When tourists go to Grinzing, Austrians go to Strebersdorf and Stammerdorf (a few go elsewhere, but these are freaks). To give them credit, some educated foreigners go to Stammersdorf as well, and when they do, they more often than not end up at the Wieninger. It’s one of the better known Heurigers on these outskirts of Vienna and has the reputation of making and serving some of the best (and most expensive) wines in the city.

Their Brettljause is listed in the “starters” section of the menu, and for a good reason: it’s quite small. It’s not especially varied either, with Speck, Schweinsbraten, Geselchtes, ham and cheese represented by two or three slices only. There are also tiny glasses with a rather standard Grammelschalz and a surprisingly good Liptauer, but all in all, the whole Brettljause can be consumed in just over five minutes, with quite a bit of time spent cutting the pieces of cartilage off the Schweinsbraten.

It’s high quality, however – not home produced, but more expensive than the typical plastic-wrapped supermarket stuff. The Speck is especially tasty and fresh (as fresh as Speck can be, anyway) and the cheese is not at all bland, which is more than unusual for a Viennese Heuriger.

Wieninger serves a competent Brettljause, and I would heartily recommend it, were it not for their cheese plate, which is something like 10 times better. If you are hungry or coming with a friend, take both!

Update (16 July 2017): The Brettljause has been removed from the menu and is now replaced with a much better Heurigenplatte!
