A Hut in the Woods

Location:Enzianhütte
Website:http://www.enzianhtte-rum.at/
Address:Garneid 6, 6063 Rum
Status:Open (last checked on 21 December 2018)
Eaten:Brettljause, two ½ beers (Zipfer)

Out of at least five potential Brettljause places on the slope of the Nordkette mountain range near Innsbruck, Enzianhütte seems to be the only one open so close to Christmas. That does not mean it is easy to reach though: it took me more than an hour to get there from the Hungerberg cable car station and almost two to get back (I did not want to risk a steep descent in the dark). I am quite sure that in summer the walk to the hut’s location in the middle of the woods is very pleasant; on a rainy winter day, when wet snow hides dirt or slippery ice underneath, it requires some commitment. Judging by the number of customers – I saw one leaving when I arrived and another one passing by for a beer while I was eating – not many are as committed as myself.

If you want to know whether I was rewarded by my efforts, the simple answer is no. The Brettljause, although quite nicely arranged, did not offer anything that could not be easily picked up at a supermarket. When the most enjoyable ingredient of a Jause is Extrawurst, something must not be quite right. The cheese and the ham were dead boring, and the Speck’s quality was very far from Tyrolean standards.

Taking the timing and the location into account, however, I cannot be too critical, especially since the service and the ambience were really nice. Besides, I am not even certain that Brettljause was on the menu, because there was no menu as such. The list of dishes was written on a blackboard at the entrance, and I don’t remember seeing a Brettljause there. So perhaps they served me whatever they could find in the kitchen. Which is fine, as far as I am concerned.
