Platzhirsch in Schladming seems to be one of the top après ski places, located directly vis-á-vis the Planai cable car. Interestingly, at 12pm, its terrace was full of people in sports clothing doing anything except skiing. Drinking, mostly. Unless they came to see the dozens of photos of Schwarzenegger decorating the walls inside, and then decided to celebrate that cultural event with a beer or two or more.

Surprisingly, apart from a butcher called Wanke, Platzhirsch appears to be the only restaurant in the whole Schladming serving a Brettljause. Even more surprisingly, its Jause is actually quite good. All the ingredients were “quality industrial,” though I most liked the cold meaty Verhackertes and a salami with sunflower seeds. Adding a slice of gorgonzola was also a neat idea, especially since the second included cheese was tasteless.

If you happen to be in Schladming in winter, there are good chances you are into skiing and stuff like Brettljausen immediately raises a red “unhealthy” flag. As an alternative to skiing, however, the Jause of Platzhirsch is fully acceptable.
