The Hintersteiner lake near the village of Scheffau is very beautiful. So beautiful, in fact, that any restaurant located by its side (and I have counted at least four) would have an immediate advantage over a restaurant not located near that lake. The Seestüberl is the easiest to reach, being just a few meters away from the hiking bus stop, and although my expectations had been quite low, I nevertheless decided to give it a chance, if anything but to relax after a hike.
The first impression (which you can share by looking at the picture, if you can bear the horribly wrong colors) was not especially positive: a round plate filled with perfectly cut and arranged slices of sausage and cheese. Certainly they all came from a supermarket, didn’t they? Well, whatever the truth is, the Jause was totally edible and even enjoyable, and the thinly cut Speck, which I intelligently left till the very end, was some of the best ones I have ever tried. Say what you want about Tyroleans, but they know a thing or two about Speck.
With its down-to-earth food, not particularly efficient service, and a pleasant (but not especially great) view, the Seestüberl creates a kind of a very relaxed, almost sleepy holiday atmosphere. If I had to spend a whole day there with a good book, I would not mind at all. Even if after the third Viertel the plot would start being hard to follow.
