After three Jausen in two days featuring expensive sheep pigs, I was quite looking forward to having something “normal.” That is why on the day of my departure from Bad Radkersburg I was very happy to discover Buschenschank Hoamathaus, a very simple Heuriger on the outskirts of the town. It does not matter that in the case of Bad Radkersburg, the “outskirts” meant just over five minutes’ walk from the town’s center.

Bad things first. The taste of pork liver in the spread was so strong, that I refused to eat it straight away. The abundant cartilage necessitated far too much surgical work with a fork and a knife and thus spoiled the effect from otherwise nice Schweinsbraten. The horseradish was so dry and washed-out that it reminded me of an old shredded carrot. And finally, the cheese was insipid.

The other ingredients – basically, ham, speck and small slices of hard sausage – were good, however, and I was completely content with the simple ambience and friendly service, but… the Heuriger or its neighbors really must do something about their sewage system. From time to time – but far too often – the wind brought a strong smell of toilet, which is not something I enjoy while having lunch. Strangely, the other customers, who were 80% cyclists exploring the South East Styria on bicycles, did not seem to be bothered by the stench at the slightest. Was that smell better than the scent of the sportsmen’s own armpits? OK, I don’t want to know.
