This place, despite being possibly the most Spartan among all the Heurigers in Neustift am Walde, was home to the best (in my opinion) goose of 2007, so it was natural to re-visit it this year.
This time the goose did not disappoint, but perhaps that was partially due to the fact that there was not much of it to disappoint. Possibly I was simply unlucky, but my portion was quite small, requiring barbarian approaches (i.e. using hands instead of a fork and a knife) to find all the pieces of meat. Still, I did not feel full at all at the end.
I have also tried the goose soup, which was basically a noodle soup with a bid piece of carrot and bits of a goose inside. I wonder if the bits came from the goose I had afterwards, i.e. whether the goose would not have been bigger, had I skipped the soup. The wine was a standard Heuriger sort: easy to drink in large quantities but never really satisfying.
Conclusion: a very tasty goose, let down by the insufficient quantity and the super-plain look of the restaurant. It’s prepared on demand, so reservation is a must.
