On the 6th of December you cannot find a goose; the goose has to find you. This one found me by accident, as a visit to Klosterneuburg was neither planned nor desired. It just happened in the absence of anything else to do in this miserable weather.

As the “flagship” restaurant of Stift Klosterneuburg, Gastmeisterei cannot be too bad, and it did not disappoint, being spacious and clean without getting too fancy. While it serves a few “creative” dishes (read: small pieces of something colorful on huge plates), they are not expensive enough to get annoying. And the toilets are extremely clean.

The goose was surprisingly good. It was quite small, like all the others this year, but, strangely, contained more meat than any of its predecessors. It really looked more like a goose filet on a bone. No fat, no knucklebones – only juicy tender meat. The Rotkraut was excellent, though the “gefüllten Kartoffel-Grießknödel” did not have much taste to justify such a long description.

They have a wine card, although my St. Laurent was not special (probably just a bad choice). And they have five or six beers, which is never a bad thing. In summary, this was not only better than no goose at all but much much better: a pleasant finish to a mediocre goose season.
