Today was my first evening in Switzerland, and I was very pleased to come across a restaurant with a Brettljause straight away. At least, I assumed that Apéro Plättli stood for a Brettljause and was not wrong. Curious as I was to try Swiss cold cuts (looking forward to cheese in particular), Rathaus Brauerei did not create a positive first impression. Centrally located next to the river Reuss, it appeared to be a typical tourist trap for the clueless first-timers like me, and the waiters looked neither friendly nor efficient. What shocked me most – despite all the warnings from those in the know – was the price: at 27 Swiss francs (nearly 29 euros), this was going to be one of the most expensive Brettljausen in my experience.
The Plättli did not look worth that much money (no black caviar in it, sorry), but was very nicely presented and featured a couple of interesting oddities. A slice of melon was quite unique, and a small bowl of olives was very welcome. On the other hand, the Brettljause did not offer a lot of variety: only one salty smoked ham, one type of Speck and cheese. The cheese was pleasantly strong, however, as I had expected. In addition, the bread was amazingly good – super-fresh and with a crunchy, slightly burnt crust, just the way I like it.
All in all, considering that I had just arrived in a totally unknown city, it was not a bad start. If other Swiss Brettljausen maintain this level of quality, my holidays are going to be successful.
