From time to time, there are Heurige that decide to shift away from their standard menus and offer something special. Normally, I welcome these endeavors, unless “special” involves game. Deer and boar sausages are really not worth the fuss.

Seltenhammer plate’s „fanciness“ mostly came from good quality pork. The creamy Schmalz was super-tasty, and had the tiny bread slices supplied with the dish (was it intentional to try adding “exclusiveness” by serving so little bread?) been fresher, I would have enjoyed it much more. I liked the ham, too, but the three types of it that the Heuriger served were far too similar. The salami was better, though, and the carrot/rocket salad was the best of all, thanks to its expert seasoning.

While rather small, the Wein4tlerplatte would have served well as a complement to quality wines. The sad truth was, the wines of Seltenhammer were average at best. I tried three of them, and neither impressed me. As a result, the fancy Brettljause itself appeared like a well-intended but missed opportunity.
