All’s well that starts well. OK, that’s not exactly how the proverb goes, but I really like it when my first Brettljause of a year is a satisfying one. Not many Heurige are open so early in January, and I was lucky to find Rohrdorfer. I was actually double lucky to find a table there, even though I arrived mere 20 minutes after the tavern’s opening. (A few years ago, I did not have such luck – Rohrhofer is not a large Heuriger and a very popular one; reserving in advance is a good idea.)
I was triple lucky because Rohrhofer’s Hauerjause was truly excellent. It lacked in the cheese department (a curse of Lower Austria), but compensated by having three extremely fresh and tasty spreads. The meat spread was the absolute highlight – very creamy and pleasantly salty. A basket of various rolls was provided, and all of them were warm, as if coming straight from the oven. If you like spreads, the menu offers a separate plate with seven different ones, and I am seriously thinking of returning just to try it.
The rest of the Brettljause was meat-heavy, and the meats were distinctly non-industrial. They even looked different from those one finds in supermarkets. The Schweinsbraten was dark brown instead of usual light gray, for example, and the Hauswurst slices did not feature as much fat as customary. All the meats were fresh and tasted refined, interesting, and different; Rohrhofer’s Hauerjause is big enough to quench even the strongest hunger, yet never gets repetitive and boring.
Combine all that great food with excellent wines and super-friendly service, and you will understand why I believe the Brettljause year of 2026 is starting really well.
