With its lineup of house-brewed craft beers, burgers, ribs, and even “beaver” in the name, it’s surprising that I had never visited Beaver Brewing Company before. Its slightly inconvenient location (almost central, but not in the area I frequent) could be a reason, but mostly it’s because this restaurant is not really a place to visit alone and, say, spend time in quietly reading a book. In the evenings, even mid-week, it fills up with jolly groups of beer and burger lovers, most of them English speakers (the closeness of the US embassy may play a role), the atmosphere is busy and packed, and the level of noise is above-average.

BBC’s spare ribs are cleverly designed to support beer drinking. They are tender and tasty, though somewhat dry. The marinade and honey-based barbeque topping are very spicy, encouraging one to order more and more beers, which for some reason are only served in 0.3l glasses. The two sauces, on the other hand, are quite mild, and I found myself dipping ribs into them to make the meat taste less hot. The portion – one and a half racks – was substantial and felt heavy. I struggled to finish the last third, because as the meat cooled down, it became significantly less enjoyable to chew.

At the end, I regretted ordering spare ribs rather than a burger, which seems to be BBC’s main specialty. The ribs were OK, but I would not take them again. The beers, on the other hand, were great, and I liked the relaxed ambience and the friendly service a lot. The Beaver is not a place to get pissed, but to savor special beers and enjoy a good company of friends.
