I said it before, I’ll say it again: the easiest way to significantly improve the quality of Brettljausen is to go to Styria. It’s like coffee in Italy – no one knows why it is so much better there, but it’s enough to cross the border and try an espresso at any café, no matter how small and disgusting the café is, to taste the difference.

Laller, in the spa town of Bad Radkersburg, is a very simple Buschenschank with just a few tables, which one is very likely to share with strangers. The wine here is not bad, but not memorable either, but the Brettljause can beat almost any Jause in the Lower Austria, hands down. All the ingredients were thinly cut, confirming another peculiarity of Styria that cuts generally get thicker the higher in the mountains one is, while Bad Radkersburg is rather close to the sea level. Size-wise, the Brettljause was big enough without getting intimidating, the heaviest and the best parts definitely being the two spreads: a creamy, tasty Schmalz and a strange brown spread that resembled a cold meatball.

The only part of the Jause that I did not like was one of the cured meats that was extremely salty. The others, however, tasted fresh and non-industrial. Slices of bread, included in the price, were very fresh, too, encouraging creation of thick sandwiches. I could further enhance the sandwiches with “green stuff” such as cucumber slices, paprika and horseradish, which were available in sufficient quantities.

The area around Bad Radkersburg is full of wine taverns, including very sophisticated ones, but for a quick and convenient Jause, for example on one’s arrival day, Laller is a straightforward and suitable choice.
