Brettljause Lite

After the defeat delivered to me by the monster of Schönanger Alm, it was refreshing to see a finishable Brettljause for a change. The Jause of Schatzbergalm, a restaurant at the top of the best-known mountain of Wildschönau – or Alpbachtal, depending on the valley from which you approach it – looks like a diet, even healthy snack. Thin and nicely arranged cold cuts make it appear light, while an impressive amount of vegetables might even make the dish appeal to some non-hardcore vegetarians.

I would actually argue that what Schatzbergalm serves is not a Brettljause but a belegtes Brot. You cannot see the bread slice on the photo, but it is present and buttered, just buried under all the cold cuts and vegs.

With no “heavy” ingredients like Speck or Verhackertes, Schatzbergalm’s Jause was quick, easy and rather pleasant to eat, yet I could not get rid of the thought that at the end of the day it was a massive rip-off. All the ingredients, while fresh, were totally industrial and easily available from any supermarket. There they would have cost, vegetables and bread included, three, maximum four euros. For the Brettljause, Schatzbergalm changed more than 14 euros.

Had the restaurant been slightly more creative and offered something light, but more interesting, preferably locally produced and unusually spiced, it would have possibly had a rare health-minded Brettljause on its menu. Instead, it served a briefly enjoyable, but eventually dull and overpriced snack.
