I had been served Jausen on plates, round boards, rectangular boards, heart-shaped boards and once even on a vinyl record. However, before Sonnklarhütte, I had never seen a Brettljause served in a wooden box like the one on the photo. To me, it looks more like a drawer.
When supplied with the picture, Google Gemini did not hesitate to identify it as a “custom rustic Alpine serving board / platter specifically designed for presenting a traditional cold platter (Marende in South Tyrol or Brettljause in Austria and Bavaria).” One does not need artificial intelligence to figure this out, of course, since the cured meats and cheeses inside the “drawer” make its purpose obvious to any idiot. And, by the way, Bavarians normally use the word “Brotzeit” and not “Brettljause”. Read this post and learn, Gemini!
The Räucherteller was not a typical Marende, which made me very happy. While small, it contained thin slices of several types of cold cuts, including, unusually for South Tyrol, Mortadella. All of them were of good quality, but the hard Kaminwurzen sausage had the strongest and the best taste. Instead of fresh horseradish, Sonnklarhütte provided a creamy version, which was a good idea, since it effectively replaced butter. The cheese did not impress me, but the presence of Schüttelbrot (in addition to other types of bread) was very welcome.
It is a pity that the shot holders, located on the top of the “drawer”, were empty. I would have appreciated trying some local schnapps, and frankly, considering the Brettljause’s price of 18.5 euros, a complementary shot should have been included. On the other hand, I do understand the difficulty of delivering food to this hut. A chairlift is the only viable option, really, and personally, I found it steep and quite scary to ride.
The whole panoramic path on which Sonnklarhütte stands is quite scary, actually. The location is jaw dropping, but the path itself, running along the mountain’s ridge is quite narrow, stony and not secured in any way. That did not seem to bother other visitors, who ran along the path happily with their kids, but I started to feel a slight vertigo. Possibly, my beer/wine excesses the day before played a role.
If heights do not bother you, taking the said path from the middle cable car station is probably a very cool (though a bit lengthy) experience. A Brettljause at the Sonnklarhütte will also be a definite highlight of the hike, and if you somehow manage to take the oddly-shaped board with you, you can consider using it at home for keeping your shoes in.
