A Wine Bar Jause

It can be argued that V1no55’s mixed plate of cold cuts is not a Brettljause. One can say that it’s a snack to accompany wine in this tiny bar in the center of Vienna. On the other hand, what is a Brettljause if not a (sometimes rather heavy) snack to accompany wine in a Heuriger? And what is a Heuriger if not a (quaint version of a) wine bar? OK, there is no wooden plate in sight, but who cares?

Especially who cares if the result is so good? This mixed plate includes ham, two types of salami and two types of cheese – indeed, this does not sound like much, but all the ingredients have very distinct tastes, making eating a far more interesting experience than devouring five different forms of the samey-tasting pig. Besides, it comes with a brilliant chutney, which goes well with both cheeses and even the meats, providing even more opportunities for combining. The only other two ingredients are stuffed pappadew peppers and capers – unusual for a “classic” Brettljause, but very good nevertheless.

Perhaps I visited V1no55 at just the right time, when it was nearly empty and quiet, but the atmosphere was very pleasant and relaxing, and the unusual “designer’s” Jause was very welcome. Of course, eating home-made sausages on the top of a mountain, surrounded by the animals those sausages were made of, is a totally different experience, but for cold winter evenings in the city, V1no55’s creation is not bad. Not bad at all.
