Zum Ockermüller was one of the top goose places of 2017, but since I saw their menu, I have always intended to come back for the Brettljause. All the signs were pointing towards a very good one, so it was a certain disappointment when it turned out to be merely good.
Despite the unusual length of the board, it was a comparatively small Jause and neither creative nor varied one. There were only four ingredients: a soft cheese, a “normal” sliced cheese, Speck and ham. The boring sliced cheese aside, all of them were of a very good quality, and the horseradish was the real Styrian one (meaning tear-inducing). The lack of pickles was upsetting, however, with a Pfefferoni cut into tiny slices looking sad and tasting sadder. They also served far too much mustard considering the size of the dish.
At the end, the Brettljause was more like a starter, not dissimilar to what Austrian hotels offer for breakfast, but using significantly better ingredients. Still hungry after finishing it, I ordered a cheese plate, and it ended up being one of the best designed and tasting cheese plates I have ever tried. No matter what, Zum Ockermüller is still recommended.
