Hard to believe, but it was more than seven months ago that I had my last “real” Brettljause. OK, I’ve eaten a few self-made ones during the lockdown times – and rather good ones, too – but still there is a great pleasure in having wine and cold cuts delivered to your table without having to worry about washing all the dishes later on. Actually, I did not intend having a Brettljause right on the day of the lockdown lifting (having planned to concentrate on beer instead), and it was almost subconscious (though possibly inspired by the four beers beforehand) that I ended up in the Heuriger-rich Neustift am Walde and found myself at the Schreiberhaus – the Heuriger that had served me quite a disastrous Brettljause the last time I visited it.

These days, the menu calls the dish slightly differently, and I am happy to say that the quality has improved, too. Gone is the ghastly headcheese, while the black pudding, though present in the form of uncomfortably thick slices, is not as dominating anymore. What does dominate a bit is the Liptauer: spreading it over the bread quickly depletes the latter, and Liptauer is generally not good for mixing with other ingredients (mustard especially).

Two types of ham, some Speck, boring cheese and a few tiny slices of hard sausage completed the Brettljause, and although I finished all of them, I did that without any interest. All the ingredients, apart from the Liptauer perhaps, lacked strong or memorable taste and created an impression of having spent the entire six-month lockdown in a freezer.

Thus, despite my understandable excitement for restarting my Jausen hunt, there is still not much to recommend about the Brettljause of the Schreiberhaus. It is not as bad as it used to be, but it is not good either.
