It is clear that Brettljausen are getting more expensive. Not that long ago, only a few exclusive locations, for example, restaurants located next to cable car stations in highly touristic areas could dare charging 13.5 euros for a platter of cold cuts. These days, a hut located on the “quiet” side of Sölden (that is, on the eastern mountain slope with no cable cars and bikers) charges 19.5 euros and does not blush.

What I find strange in this trend is that the Brettljausen are also getting bigger. It is as if the restaurants are saying, “We cannot make it cheap for you, but we are going to put more on your plate as a compensation.” Bloody hell, you can. Simply take every sausage and cheese and cut it in half, then charge half the price. I would have happily paid 10 euros for a half of what I ate today.

I am not complaining specifically about Stallwies Alm, however. On the contrary, I found the location super-nice (despite the rainy weather), the service very friendly, and the Brettljause quite competent. It had good fresh Speck on it, two types of cheese including a strong gorgonzola, and a Hauswurst that was much tenderer than usual. I was less convinced about the strange pale-colored sausage that looked like the outcome of a salami and an Extrawurst having sex, but I truly liked the white spread with a subtle garlic flavor. Importantly, there was plenty of “green stuff” on the plate, including cucumbers, radish and rocket, and the bread was plentiful and fresh.

The Brettljause could have been better though, and for the price the Alm charges, it should have been better. More variety would have been welcome and maybe an egg. Instead, the dish was designed as if to serve two persons: the sausage, the Speck and the cheese came in two big but identical slices. It was definitely filling – and saved me money for I could not even think of a dinner afterwards – but finishing this Brettljause was more of a struggle than a pleasure.
