After yesterday’s experience with a Brettljause so authentic it was nearly inedible, at first the Brettljause of Raineralm did not create a great impression. Being another forkless dish, it, too, contained a thick slice of Speck and a Hauswurst, plus some thickly cut cheese. The differences were in a ball of Verhackert and some white spread in a small bowl. And again, it cost a whopping 17 euros.
It took me a while to start noticing the little touches that indicated that although the Brettljause might have taken less than a minute to prepare and arrange, some love had gone into it. For instance, a tiny glass jar that contained spiced salt, or a big piece of fresh butter, or the possibly edible yellow flower for decoration. Or a couple of slices of cucumber and a small yellow tomato in the spread bowl.
More importantly, the cheeses were of three or four types that not only looked but tasted differently. I was happy that Glundner was not featured much (I did not touch it), and I thoroughly enjoyed the salty Verhackert. The Hauswurst and especially the Speck required quite a lot of work with a small knife, which tired me, but I can say nothing bad about their quality.
The only sort of negative thing I can mention is that Raineralm – like the other three Brettljause restaurants in the area I have tried in the past days – would have been better off serving a smaller portion for a lower price. 17 or 18 euros for a plank with cold cuts is a lot of money, and justifying the price by piling up more of the stuff is counter-productive.
