As one is approaching Schwussnerhütte, Seebachtal valley, already quite beautiful, starts to offer particularly spectacular views. If you want to have five waterfalls in a single photo, this is the place to go. However, don’t forget about having a Brettljause at Schwussnerhütte, too, for it offers a delight of a different kind.
While featuring the “musts” of Carinthian Brettljausen, which are a thick slice of Speck and a complete Hauswurst, it also had four (!) spreads, all very fresh and tasty, and some nondescript salami. The cheese component was provided by a few thin slices of not strong, but also not completely flavorless cheese as well as some Glundner (luckily, not much). All that was accompanied by a lot of “greens” (radish, cucumbers, onions, pepperoni, horseradish, tomatoes), plenty of butter and a complimentary schnapps.
I had to wait long for the Brettljause – the restaurant was nearly full when I arrived – and the large quantities of uncommon dark beer might have made me biased, but I left Schwussnerhütte extremely satisfied. The area around Mallnitz offers many more hiking possibilities than my three-day vacation can accommodate, but if I ever come back to see what I have missed, I will surely revisit Schwussnerhütte for its great location, beer and food.
