If you take a map and look at the surroundings of Tulln, you can easily spot several lakes on the opposite side of the Danube. With numerous paths between them, these lakes appear to be a perfect area for hiking and/or shooting a few photos to revive a stalled Instagram account.

Nothing is further from the truth. Not only are the lakes and everything around them a private property (with numerous signs making it clear what troubles await you if you dare coming closer), but they are also barely visible behind natural fences provided by surrounding vegetation. The paths, though wide, are covered with small pebbles and are really unpleasant to hike on, especially with cars occasionally passing by and raising clouds of dust. My suspicion is that the entire neighborhood belongs to some hunting association, as evident by multiple wooden shooting towers scattered across it.

If you persist hiking, however – or use an asphalt bicycle path to walk around the area, which is smarter – you will eventually reach the village of Neuaigen, featuring a privately owned (and therefore inaccessible) palace, a few pretty houses, and the Heuriger am Dorfplatz’l.

As my luck could have it, I found no table in the tavern’s inner garden. Some sort of a music performance was expected to start later, and people were already beginning to arrive. Staying inside had its advantages, on the other hand, since the day was super-hot and it felt slightly cooler indoors. Good quality and cold wine, and particularly cold mineral water were extremely welcome.

The Brettljause did not impress, however. Meat-heavy, it featured various thin slices that had one thing in common – a lack of any interesting taste. Only the Schweinsbraten was the exception, and not in a good way; the taste of it was off-putting for some reason. The two spreads were not better, obviously having been, too, produced at the Tullner Factory of Bland.

The Heuriger was considerably more exciting than the lakes, but there is no real reason to pay it another visit.
