Weingut Schlossberg may be listed on my beloved Top Heuriger web site (no joke, it’s really very useful), but if you decide to pay it a visit, don’t expect to find traditional Heuriger atmosphere with cozy rustic interiors, low wooden ceilings and dim lighting. Schlossberg is mainly an event location, perfect for weddings, company gatherings or joyful memorial receptions for deceased wine lovers. It is bright, spacious and modern, yet – thanks to its impressive dimensions – still capable of providing enough privacy if you are looking for it.
If you are looking for a Brettljause, however, as I naively did, you are out of luck. You can probably get one, if you politely ask, from the Heuriger’s rudimentary buffet, but you will not find it on the menu, which, in addition to wine, contains a fair choice of totally normal dishes, including spare ribs.
At a few cents under 20 euros, the ribs of Schlossberg can be considered a bargain these days, and although you only get a single rack, the portion is big enough to be a good value for money. The meat is very well marinated and therefore easily enjoyable without any sauce. A sauce is mainly needed for the roasted potatoes, which are great, but become boring after a while. Unfortunately, the Heuriger only supplies garlic sauce, and a very strong one, so the flavor of garlic remains with you for hours afterwards, shoving aside all the memories.
One of such good memories involved roasted onions cut into very small pieces and scattered over the ribs. A less pleasant memory was of trying to remove tiny remaining bits of meat off the bones and continuously failing. (If you prefer to eat ribs with your hands rather than a knife and a fork, you won’t have this problem.) Were I really picky, I would have called the ribs a bit dry, but in essence, they were much better than I had expected, especially combined with quality and fair-priced wines. Weingut Schlossberg is a fantastic place if you have a big noisy group to entertain. If you like spare ribs, on the other hand, you may still want to keep this location on your list, even though it might not offer you the coziness and privacy of more traditional Heurige.
