They should come up with a different name for things like this. A “Billajause,” for example. Or simply write it in English: “Assorted cold cuts on a traditional wooden plate.” At least people would know what to expect: a dish, whose all ingredients can be purchased from a supermarket during a 3-minute long visit.

Not that there is much to purchase: some blood sausage, some Speck, some Schweinsbraten, Bergkäse (don’t forget to remove it from the plastic!), pre-shredded horseradish, the cheapest mustard available, onions, a picked cucumber and a couple of salad leaves for decoration. The Schweinsbraten are probably the best part, though quality discussions are really out of place in this case.

All this is really a shame because the restaurant and especially its garden is quite sweet. Located in the 8th district very close to the city centre, it has a very cozy, if a bit noisy, courtyard with tables arranged around a huge chestnut tree. The bread they serve is quite fresh (although industrial, too), the mixed salad is even enjoyable, and the beer (Starobrno) is one of the better beers one can have in Vienna.

Zum narrischen Kastanienbaum can be a nice place to come for a drink on a weekday evening, but as a Brettljause provider it is a disappointment.
