Most people (except crazy cyclists who do not drink wine) prefer the left bank of the Danube when visiting the Wachau valley – that’s where Dürnstein, Weissenkirchen, Krems and other main tourist towns are located. This year, I am exploring the right bank, however, and find it quieter, less touristic and just as good wine-wise. In addition, one gets rewarded with a nice view towards the main Wachau’s landmarks.

In the case of Weingut Lahrnstein, one can enjoy the view of Spitz and its castle ruins. The Heuriger seems to be very popular among the locals, and while there were still a few free tables in the garden when I arrived ten minutes after its opening, very soon no space was left, and I even ended up with a couple of people sharing the table with me.

Lahrnstein’s service is very efficient, meaning that your wine glass never stays empty for more than a couple of minutes. And the wine is very good. The Brettljause was fine, too, lacking on the vegetables/pickles side (the pickled cucumber was plain sad), but featuring really fresh meat cuts and tasty Liptauer. In terms of size, the Jause was average, even smallish, but at least it never got boring or felt like a struggle to finish.

If you really prefer the left bank, however, there is a very convenient ferry that can take you from Spitz to the other side. From there, Lahrnstein is mere 15 minutes by foot.
