It is actually surprising that I have never tried the spare ribs of Rotel Hiasl before. Not only is it the most known restaurant in Vienna’s lovely Lobau park, it is also very close to my house, and in summer I cycle past it almost weekly. The reason might be that in the past, I became interested in the restaurant’s Brettljause offering and got so disappointed that never came back. The Brettljause is now out of the menu for good, and I am happy to report that Rotel Hiasl’s spare ribs are much, much better.

Well-marinated, with a tangy but good-tasting topping, the spare ribs tasted like a good pork filet. The meat had a perfect texture – neither too far nor too tough – and was seasoned with just the right amount of salt. My only criticism concerns the cocktail and garlic sauces, which were totally industrial and, to be honest, unnecessary, because dipping the ribs in them made them taste worse.

Roter Hiasl has a cozy, partially shady garden that would be perfect for outdoor grilling. I don’t really know why they don’t grill the ribs and other dishes outside, though it might be that open grill is forbidden because of the nearby forest and the national park areas. However, even the kitchen-grilled spare ribs I ate were better than expected.
