Altenburger is a typical non-tourist Lower Austrian Heuriger. Someone whose only experience with Heurige comes from visiting Grinzing is likely to be shocked by the quality of local wines (especially when compared to their prices) and the authentic “village” atmosphere of the tavern. That person will quickly declare Altenburger a hidden gem, the best place to have wine and snack in Austria ever, and recommend it to all the friends and colleagues.
The truth is, Altenburger is a simple, pleasant tavern with good wines, but is not that much different from many other taverns in the region, as long as one stays away from the main tourist paths. Even the Brettljause is almost an exact copy of Brettljausen served in many villages of the Weinviertel and the Wachau valley. Every region of Austria has its own Brettljause style, and what you see on the photo is a standard Jause of the Lower Austria. It is fresh and nicely presented, but lacks strong flavors and is therefore not memorable.
The only ingredient that left an impression was one extremely salty type of meat. Obviously, it was not a great impression and, with other ingredients being largely non-descript, unfortunately the one that defined the dish for me. There are better places than Altenburger around, and there are worse, but 80% are kind of the same.
