Once upon a time, the tiny town of Türnitz had its own ski lift, making it a rather prosperous little town. In summer, with the skiers gone to do whatever skiers always do in summer, the lift went on working, taking people to a nice little hut next to a nice little pond. It was even called the Teichhütte, which means the hut by a pond. That hut was famous for serving a hardcode Brettljause, featuring ingredients prepared from the hut owners’ own farm animals, mostly young calves. There was something looking like chewed up pink meat and something looking like chewed up gray meat, and very good they were, too.

Times change. The ski lift has been dismantled (probably dooming the town of Türnitz as well, but it’s a different story). The pond got flattened by heavy tractors and turned into a meadow. The Teichhütte burned down and got rebuilt, keeping its name despite the absence of a pond. And the Brettljause has turned into something called a Hüttenbrot.

Believe me, it’s still a Brettljause, just with the bread hidden under the meats and cheese rather than served separately. Unfortunately, there is nothing in it that made the old Brettljause special: only the Speck, Wiener-type salty sausage, red smoked ham and rather plain cheese. What make up for this lack of inspiration are tons of rather good horseradish and half of an egg. There are also some pickled cucumbers, paprika and Pfefferoni, but basically that’s it.

It’s not bad stuff, and the view from the hut is worth the almost two hour walk to it, but sadly, life has not been kind to the Teichhütte, and this Jause is testimony to that.
