I spotted Restaurant Čarman when hiking around Lake Bled and immediately decided that it would be a perfect location for dinner. The 20 to 25-minute walk that takes you from the town of Bled to the village of Mlino is by far the most enjoyable part of the round trail. Late in the evening, with the Bled Castle beautifully illuminated on the opposite shore, it’s magic.
Čarman is touristic, of course, like everything in the area, but seems to be more refined than the other restaurants I have tried here so far. Its ratings are great, and for good reasons – the atmosphere and the service are spot on. The ribs were… strange. They were certainly not what I had expected. To start with, there were only three ribs in total, but with much more meat on them than usual. The sides were very original, too, including a tasty honey sauce and mashed potatoes. All in all, it looked like a sophisticated, albeit smallish, dish.
The excellent presentation and creative sides were, unfortunately, marred by the meat, which was rather plain. Imagine tender Schweinsbraten with no marinade at all – that were the ribs of Čarman. If staying at Lake Bled and not allergic to slightly overpriced tourist restaurants, definitely go to Čarman, but order something other than spare ribs.
