Located at the intersection of three cable cars on the main slope of the popular skiing village of Seefeld, in winter Rosshütte must be absolutely packed with people and making a ton of money every day. It is quite busy in summer too, but some areas of this huge restaurant are fenced out, while the self-service area appears to operate at a fraction of its capacity.

Rosshütte’s gigantomania does not stop with the architecture, however, but spreads into its Brettljausen. Although the only thickly-cut ingredients were two types of cheese (including the Tyrolean Graukäse, which is, frankly, not one of my favorites), I needed more than an hour to finish the dish, and the second half of the meal was quite a struggle. It was considerate of the restaurant to include a 0,04 liter bottle of schnapps with the Jause; it helped open secret compartments of my stomach when I thought I could not manage any more.

Although Rosshütte filled the plank with enough slices of different sausages to make it look varied and, at a first glance, even attractive, I have little doubt that the main goal had been to maximize the return on investment. All the ingredients were of supermarket quality, and not even of good supermarket quality. These were the kind of sausages you would pick up only because their plastic packaging had a “-50%” sticker on them. Interestingly, the snack that Tyrol is most proud of – the Speck – was present as just a few tiny match-like slices, possibly to save more cash.

With food prices rising, I am becoming increasingly fed up with the Brettljausen that cost 18 and more euros and pretend to say “sorry” by including huge quantities of crap. Fortunately, I have recently seen enough examples of expensive but creative Brettljauasen not to lose my trust in the humankind, but the Brettljause of Rosshütte is, alas, not one of them.
