Brunnerwirt is one of those places that are very hard to write anything exciting about, though that is definitely not the restaurant’s fault. I fact, I liked it a lot. Not expecting a Brettljause at all, I received a rather good one, but I cannot think of any story that would be remotely interesting, even compared to my generally very dull posts. Therefore, I am going to be lazy and switch to the bullet points mode.
- Mauterndorf is a tourist village, popular among skiers thanks to its proximity to the Grosseck cable car.
- It has a few very old and pretty buildings as well as a castle, so would normally be worth visiting even if you do not ski – but do not expect to find anything that would keep you occupied for longer than half a day.
- Brunnerwirt is a typical small town tavern, frequented by the locals and serving generous portions at reasonable prices. Its rating on Google indicates that it is well liked.
- The Brettljause’s most prominent ingredient is a thick slice of Geselchtes. The others include cheese, Speck, ham, and slices of a Hauswurst.
- The Geselchtes and the Speck are great; the rest is so-so. The bread could certainly be fresher.
- Taking a salad in addition to the Brettljause was a good idea, not only because the Jause lacked greens (one pickled cucumber notwithstanding), but also because the salad itself was excellent – so good that I considered ordering a second one.
- The service was very friendly and fast. Brunnerwirt really looks like a traditional family establishment.
To make it short, if you end up in Mauterndorf, which is home to many restaurants, Brunnerwirt is certainly a place you should consider visiting. Instead of the Bauernjause, however, I would recommend going for a Cordon Bleu or something else hot. The dishes I saw delivered to the other clients looked very appetizing.
